We sat down with Steve to learn more about his experience with the Grob G 120TP-A and his thoughts on the future of pilot training.

What were your initial impressions of the Grob G 120TP-A when you first saw it in person at Goodyear, Arizona?

Visually, the Grob G 120TP-A leaves a strong impression! One thing that stood out right away was the cockpit design. The glass cockpit and EFIS displays give it a modern, professional feel, and the side-by-side seating makes a big difference for training compared to tandem-seat trainers, where communication can feel a bit disconnected.

What particular handling characteristics of the Grob G 120TP-A stood out to you during your first flight?

In the air, it felt solid and predictable. The power-to-weight ratio is great, the climb performance is strong, and the controls are precise. It has the feel of a much bigger, high-performance turboprop while still being light, responsive, and well-balanced.

How do you see the Grob G 120TP-A fitting into the North American training landscape, both for civilian and military training?

The Grob G 120TP-A is a versatile aircraft designed to fulfill the training needs of various aviation sectors. It has been utilized by air forces worldwide, notably the Royal Canadian Air Force as part of its new military pilot training program under SkyAlyne. The Grob G 120TP-A is also highly suitable for Upset Prevention and Recovery Training (UPRT), transition training, and civilian flight training organizations seeking to provide cutting-edge training solutions.

How did the Grob G 120TP-A compare to the training aircraft you used during your time training as an RCAF fighter pilot?

Compared to the training aircraft I used during my training, the Grob G 120TP-A more accurately reflects the technology currently employed in the field. It is a modern, turbine-powered aircraft equipped with advanced avionics and full aerobatic capabilities, making it an ideal trainer for future military pilots.

In your opinion, what makes the Grob G 120TP-A especially suited for modern military flight training programs?

One of the Grob G 120TP-A’s biggest advantages is that it can serve as a single-type solution, capable of taking a pilot from ab initio training to advanced flying training. Because of its capability, diversity, and performance, it eliminates the need for multiple aircraft types in a training pipeline, making it an efficient and seamless training platform.
